Expansion to the Buchanan Building, Office and Lounge Facilities for the Arts Undergraduate Society, Alma Mater Society, University of British Columbia

This recent expansion carefully inserts valuable social and office spaces for the Arts Undergraduate Society into a deeply recessed overhang of an existing building. The Buchanan Building, designed by Thompson Berwick Pratt Architects, and built in phases during the 1960's, is considered one of the University of British Columbia's significant buildings. The project maintains the elegant proportions and rhythm of the existing building, while adding considerable activity and amenity to a corner of the complex which was previously a wasted space.

In order to maintain the transparency both into the space and beyond, the new insertion was conceived as a fully glazed enclosure, with those elements of the program requiring a higher level of privacy and security placed towards the centre of the space, the more "solid" elements treated more as millwork than actual framed walls.
