I am most proud about these drawings as they represent the ease and speed at which I am learning and becoming productive. (Four months of evenings and weekends just one or two hours per day) I am grateful I never spent time learning AutoCAD. I watch my boss draw an arc in AutoCAD and only have pity... lol. I have always enjoyed learning new skills and have thusly become a Jack of All Trades... master of one. I spent four years in the US Coast Guard then spent the next 20 years as a tugboat captain. I worked the harbor in Seattle mostly, but have towed coastwise from San Diego to Valdez, Alaska. I've pushed around barges and equipment of all sizes, towed US Navy nuclear submarines, carriers like the USS Carl Vinson, even towed the Battleship Missouri. The longest thing I ever moved with a tug was a portion of the new Hood Canal Bridge. The old bridge blew down in a storm. One of three of the new replacement sections was 1500' long! I know the Inside Passage to Alaska like the back of my hand...which was a good thing when all our charts blew out the wheel house door one time during a storm. I am a fair machinist. I've built several steam engines, one of which ran merrily on 3 pounds of air... an achievement if you are into that kind of thing. I work with steel, hydraulics, pneumatics, winches, cranes, tugs, barges and now... computers and CAD. When things get slow, I plan on finishing a design for a Sterling Engine and then... build it. I may have invented a linkage that will allow this four cylinder engine to run with about 6 moving parts... until I build it, it's just hot air. Chuck Gallup |
| Reliant 120 Barge Capra: This is a side shot of the aft barge holding 450 tons of cable in a rotating "tub". The key in dealing with cable this large is to avoid sharp bends. Notice the sweep guiding the cable down the backside. Using PowerCADD, I was able to easily determine/design a 20' radius sweep which allows the cable to be pulled down the Capra at almost any boom angle while maintaining a smooth flowing bend greater than the minimum 2.5 meter minimum bend specification. Bend it less than 2.5 meter radius and we are owners! |
