Campion Center Courtyard Perspective, Weston, MA, Brian Groen

This perspective sketch was developed for the client and design team for a variety of uses. First it will be used as a fund raising tool, second it has allowed us to study various types of gazebo, pergola, and bower treatments for a focal point, and third we have been able to study grading, wall/curb heights, and planting design. The courtyard is a small, to be newly enclosed space, which will be utilized by memory impaired assisted living clients housed at the Campion Center.

The perspective drawing of The Campion Center was completely done in PowerCADD and set up with the aid of the PerspectiveTools palette. We first established the best viewing point that best showed the space. We found it easiest to model all the vertical elements in the plan first to get a feel for how everything will look and fit into the space. In this case, with a courtyard, we began with the building, since it defined the space within which we were working. All curbs and retaining walls (the vertical changes) were modeled next to provide the framework for the courtyard and most importantly tell what will and will not be seen from this perspective.

Next all site materials were added. The straight or rectilinear objects within the design are easily mapped or drawn into perspective, but any curved or oval shapes such as those in our gazebo and decorative urns required some time and an eye for accuracy.

 

  All vegetation was added last. The detail and the number we used tends to add to the file size and slows down the process of working on the drawing. Trees were shown as transparent in order not to obscure things. Choosing the right colors, textures, and transparency to express your design tends to be harder then the actual drafting of the drawing!

This is the companion illustrative plan, used for initial design decisions, fundraising, and preliminary cost estimating. The same base with updated building footprint, will be used for the construction documents.

 

  Because the existing building is a neo-classical Georgian, five-story brick building, we felt it was important to respect the historic 1930's building type and materials.
