This is an inverted header tank. It lets you fly upside down, if that's what turns you on.

Here's a close-up look at the tank construction.

This is the check valve boss that goes at the top of the header tank. A steel ball sits inside the fitting. In the upright position, air can pass freely around it, but when you turn upside down, the ball seats in the fitting above it and keeps fuel from leaking out.
