Lane Public Library Steed Hammond Paul designed a new 25,000 square feet branch building to meet the growing circulation demands for the Lane Public Library while becoming a new city signature building for the City of Fairfield. A design team comprised of representatives from both the City of Fairfield and Lane Public Library worked with Steed Hammond Paul on the design of the library. The new facility creates more space for library materials, public seating and staff work space. The design focused on making the library as user friendly as possible, through clear orientation and location of key elements in the building. Fundamental ideas integrated into the design include: flexible spaces that can be reorganized as conditions change; an interior that maximizes staff utilization and productivity; the integration of technology; and the ability to accommodate future expansion. The design included meeting space for library programs and public use. The exterior design of the building provides a "postcard" image for Fairfield. The site design reinforces the City's ideas for a "village green" master plan. Steed Hammond Paul also provided preliminary site feasibility and planning services.
