Douglas Teiger, AIA
Architect

Residence located in Los Angeles California.

I have not had a drawing board in my office since I founded CAT Architects in 1990. PowerCADD has always been my CAD package. I investigated all the options at the time, and for ease of use, sophistication of tools, and low cost the decision was easy to make. PowerCADD allows our jobs to be on time and on budget. This includes both design drawings and contract documents. For the design phase we usually present our drawings using the Squiggle command. This creates a freehand look to our work. I also place furniture in all schematic plans. By creating furniture libraries, I can add furniture to the design drawing in less than an hour. By doing this clients are very appreciative, and they feel I am providing interior design services at no extra cost. The Engineered Software company is like a family. The technical support people are so friendly, I am on a first-name basis, (but they still ask for my serial number) and have made numerous suggestions that have been incorporated into future versions.

The WildTools add-on is indispensable because of the additional tools that enable me to draw quicker and with fewer steps. This has enabled me to create non-rectilinear designs with no restrictions because of the CAD package. For example, I draw at various angles quicker than the traditional methods of hand drawing with an adjustable angle. My design drawings look more finished than a lot of other architect's contract documents.

In the following projects you can see that there are no limitations for the creativity in design. The most difficult part of drawing creative plans is finding the clients who want something other than a box.

Warren Residence located in Los Angeles California is situated on top a hill with panoramic 360 degree views from downtown to the ocean on both the city and valley sides. The "Y" shape plan allowed for every room to have a view. The entry is shaped by separating the garage into two gate houses that frames the entry tower. The courtyard at the second level is centered on an infinity pool and enclosed by a colonnade providing sun protection from the southern exposure.

Lamb Residence, Los Angeles, California. The client's requirement
was simple; "I don't want a box for my house".

Hugging a north-facing slope, this 5,000 square foot residence was designed as a series of objects housing the basic rooms, Entry, Living. Dining, Kitchen, Family, Office, Gym, 4 Bedrooms and bathrooms. There is a strong indoor/outdoor relationship linked to decks on the view side and gardens on the rear and side of the house. Scheduled completion is late 1999. Once the plans are drawn in PowerCADD, I import them into my 3D package, DesignWorkshop.
