PDF save w/out background

Post by Marté » Thu May 27, 2021 8:16 pm

I'd like to be able to save a pdf with a transparent background so it could be imported into a drawing and overlay other layers.

I'm a little confused as it can depend on the source of the PDF (what application made it and the type of data). Generally PCadd created PDFs will open with a transparent background and can be stacked and their positions adjusted front/back either by using Layers or by moving the objects front / Back via the Arrange Menu.

For example - see attached image where I did this:
• created an simple test PCadd drawing
• print - save as PDF
• Open that PDF In PowerCADD again
• The background is transparent
---
Convert that PDF to Objects and you get even more aggregate data (see attached)

Same holds true for more complex drawings

Same generally holds true for drawings I receive from ACad users that are printed to PDF

However, sometimes the background of the PDF can be solid/opaque white depending on the app that made it and the file content. For example I have received and generated PDFs from illustrator or photoshop where the background is solid, depending on the content (raster, vector, background layer color, etc).

Two quick tests to try in PCadd
Test One ; turn on Grid Lines
1. Open the PDF (file open or drag and drop to PCD application icon in dock)
2. Drawing setup > Preferences -> Show -> turn Grid Lines ON
3. Maybe the background is transparent but the white PCadd paper is confusing and if it's truly transparent the grid lines will show

Test Two: Convert to Objects
1. Open the PDF
2. Select the PDF
3. Choose Tool Menu -> convert to Objects
If the file is object based you'll see a variety of selection handle bars. You can also turn on Grid Lines as noted above as a cross check

Hope that helps.
Cheers

You're right, PC creates pdf's with a transparent background. I was working with them in another application where they were showing up opaque and I made the wrong assumption. Thanks for the clarification.
